Dressmaker guide: Your First Dress, Commissions and Controls

Dressmaker guide for Steam: make your first dress, plan fabric purchases, finish commissions and use the latest mannequin and cutting-room controls.

Dressmaker guide: start with a customer commission

This Dressmaker guide covers Cozy Lives' single-player dressmaking game, released on Steam for Windows and macOS on September 21, 2026. Start with the story commissions: read the customer's request, take their measurements, plan a dress in the sketchbook, then work through cutting, fitting and sewing.

Your first goal should be completing that sequence comfortably. PC Gamer's hands-on report describes the story as the introduction to the game's systems, so resist treating your first order as a showcase for every idea you have. Choose a design you can follow, and save a more elaborate experiment for when each workshop step feels familiar.

Plan the dress before buying fabric

Customers commission dresses for particular occasions and personal tastes. Use those requests as your design brief: decide what the finished outfit should communicate before shopping. The sketchbook lets you design and colour the dress with fabric samples and appliqué; the publisher lists materials including cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet.

Click the component names in the sketchbook to inspect your options. Build 410 made these interactive labels clearer. Make one design decision at a time so you can explain why each part belongs in the outfit.

PC Gamer reports that the game calculates fabric requirements after the customer's measurements are taken. Check those quantities before buying, especially when mixing materials. Our recommendation is to keep the first design visually simple: decide where you want the main fabric and where an accent belongs, then buy for that plan. Avoid purchasing a selection merely because every fabric looks tempting.

Cut, fit and sew without losing track of the pieces

Pattern placement affects the finished dress. Steam's description specifically distinguishes aligning pieces with the grain from cutting on the bias, so follow each pattern's directions instead of rotating pieces solely to fit them into a gap.

Next, check the fit on the mannequin. PC Gamer confirms that you adjust the dress form as well as measure the customer. If you cannot identify a piece, hover over its inventory panel: the placement hint introduced in Build 410 shows where it belongs on the mannequin. Use that hint before repeatedly trying different spots.

The same hands-on report describes undoing cutting mistakes and removing a problematic sewn piece. Pause and correct the part that went wrong before building more work around it. Finish by sewing the garment and adding your chosen decorations; Steam lists buttons, bows, appliqué and lace trims among the options.

Finish commissions, then try your own designs

The publisher confirms that delivering customer dresses earns reputation and coin. Make a final pass against the request before handing over the garment: compare the intended look with the result, and inspect the details you changed during construction. Use this checklist to keep the final inspection focused.

For personal projects, Steam also describes displaying your designs in the shop window and selling ready-made dresses. Keep that separate from completing a customer order. The October update renamed the photo-scene sale button Sell as off-rack, making its purpose clearer. Use commissions to practise a brief, then use your own designs to explore ideas outside that brief.

Useful controls after the October update

The developer's October 14 Build 443 update changed several interactions. These are useful places to start if an older walkthrough does not match your screen:

  • In the mannequin scene, hold Control while scrolling to zoom; hold the right mouse button and drag to pan.
  • In the cutting room, use the added button to collect all panel pieces. Discarding fabric now requires its dedicated button.
  • Turn pages in the sketchbook to find other open commissions.
  • Try Fast Trim Placement for fewer clicks, or Less Animation to disable scrolling textures and zoom effects in the sewing and cutting scenes.

Read the control hints along the bottom of the screen while learning each workspace. Before assuming that a missing action is a bug, check which scene and tool you are using.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dressmaker released, and can I play it on Mac?
Yes. The full Steam game launched on September 21, 2026, and its official store lists Windows and macOS. This guide covers that release.
Do I need sewing experience to play Dressmaker?
No. Free Lives explicitly says prior dressmaking knowledge is unnecessary. Begin with customer commissions and learn the process through a manageable design before attempting a complicated outfit.
How do you make money in Dressmaker?
Deliver commissioned dresses to earn coin and reputation, or create ready-made designs to sell through your shop. Choose the customer-delivery route when finishing an order; off-rack sales serve your independent designs.
Does Dressmaker have full controller support?
The October 14 developer update still describes gamepad controls and complete control rebinding as priorities for future work. Do not assume full controller support from the availability of the Steam version.
