Farflung game guide: five pins, rare answers and map rules

Play the official Farflung geography game: five country pins, rarity scoring, practice, map controls and the territory rules that affect answers.

How to play Farflung

Farflung is a free daily geography game at farflung.game: answer five prompts by pinning countries, with rarer valid answers earning more distance. The official guide gives a default 60 seconds per prompt, plus an optional harder 30-second clock. Start with the untimed practice round if placing a pin accurately is unfamiliar.

The creator’s guide, FAQ and rulings were checked October 22, 2026. The suggestions below are our own way of approaching those rules, not a claim that we found today’s best answers. Similarly named sites can run different prompts and modes; use the official host if you want to compare an expedition with friends.

Place, inspect, then commit your pin

Read the whole prompt before moving the map. Tap to place a pin, tap again to reposition it, and zoom when a small country is hard to distinguish. The guide says the default map shows the country under your pin before you choose Drop pin. Use that label as a final check: knowing the answer and placing the answer are separate tasks.

Our recommendation is to identify a reliable country first, then consider a less obvious valid alternative. Keep enough time to place whichever you choose. A rare answer is worth nothing if its pin lands outside a recognized country. The game commits a placed land pin when the clock expires, so leaving a tentative wrong pin in place is not a neutral action.

Keyboard players can tab to the map, pan with arrows, zoom with plus/minus, and use Space or Enter to drop an already placed pin. Practise that sequence before spending the daily attempt on learning the controls.

Rarity helps only after correctness

The official rules use Common, Uncommon, Rare, Elusive and Farflung tiers. They do not mean “choose the smallest country” for every question. First decide whether the place meets the actual condition, then think about how readily other people might recall it.

Try making a mental shortlist from different regions rather than repeatedly searching the same familiar part of the map. For a language question, distinguish official status from a language merely being spoken there. For a geographical question, distinguish a country from a territory or an island belonging to it. Those checks prevent a clever association from becoming a miss.

Avoid using a guide’s example as today’s answer key. Farflung explicitly says its German-language example is only a demonstration. A shared daily prompt and a teaching example serve different purposes; copying the latter without reading the question will not establish correctness.

Territories and disputed ground: follow the game’s rulings

Farflung’s rulings assign a land pin to its country, including territories. The country label matters for prompts about names, capitals and official languages; a territory’s separate name is not automatically substituted. The rules also treat disputed ground separately, and the current guide tells you to move the pin onto a country.

For a borderline answer, our suggested sequence is to check the pin label, read the prompt’s condition again, and inspect its explanation at camp. If you still think the list is wrong, use Should something else count? with the expedition number, answer and a supporting link. The published dispute process can add accepted answers retroactively; it is not an invitation to assume every plausible suggestion has already been accepted.

These are the game’s scoring conventions, not a general geography or legal ruling. For another rare-answer format, see Krillion, where you type answers instead of choosing map locations.

Daily attempts, practice and returning later

A new expedition opens at local midnight. The official FAQ says the last seven days remain in Past week, but late completions do not count toward the streak. There is no official unlimited mode at this check; the repeatable practice round is a different option.

Do not leave a live prompt open while researching an answer and expect its clock to pause. The guide says time continues while you are away. Our advice is to finish a prompt before stepping away, then return between prompts when possible. Choose a session where you can give five short decisions your attention rather than turning one daily attempt into a background tab.

Frequently asked questions

Does Farflung have unlimited play?
The official FAQ says not yet. Its untimed one-prompt practice is repeatable, while Past week offers recent daily expeditions.
Can I move a pin before submitting?
Yes. The official guide says to tap again to move it. Check the displayed country before choosing Drop pin.
When do prompts reset?
At midnight in your local time. Everyone gets the same five prompts for that date, according to the creator.
