Krillion: How to Play the Daily Dive and Score Rare Answers
Play Krillion at krillion.io: 7 daily prompts, 25 seconds each, and rarer answers sink deeper. Rules, scoring, Unlimited, packs and tips.
How to play Krillion: the daily dive in 30 seconds
Krillion is played in your browser at krillion.io: every day everyone gets the same 7 prompts, you have 25 seconds to name one thing for each, and the rarer your valid answer, the deeper you sink. Press Begin Descent and you're in.
The official rules, as shown on the start screen:
- 7 prompts a day, the same for every player.
- 25 seconds to name one thing.
- Rare answers score big; obvious ones "float".
- Every point sinks you 10 metres, and 700 points reaches the trench — a perfect dive.
- One dive per day, no second chances.
Krillion is made by a single developer who goes by kp. The FAQ warns that copycat clones exist, and plenty of lookalike domains run their own versions with different timers and question counts. If you want to compare scores with friends, make sure everyone is playing at krillion.io.
Krillion scoring: what makes an answer "rare"
A common assumption is that points depend on how many players typed the same answer that day. The creator's FAQ describes something different:
- Answer sets are built by merging dictionaries, wiki pages, encyclopedias and whatever other sources a question calls for.
- Rarity is scored mechanically for some prompts, using a familiarity database of how often a word or name turns up in what people read and write. Prompts that can't be reduced to a number get LLM assistance plus a manual pass.
- The Krillion — the special gem answer for a prompt — isn't simply the rarest option. It is also picked for fun factor, so it's something at least a few players will actually find.
The FAQ also names a trap: "too clever" is the go-to "obscure" pick that isn't actually obscure. The start screen puts it bluntly: the pick that feels clever, the school thought of it too.
Krillion Unlimited, the archive and themed packs
Finished today's dive? The site links three more ways to play:
| Mode | What it is |
|---|---|
| Unlimited ∞ | An endless dive, run after run |
| Archive | Past daily dives |
| Themed packs | Words & Language (English, 30 chapters), At the Movies (30 pictures) and Music, with more "being charted" |
According to the FAQ, any purchase for any pack turns off ads across the whole site, and linking a Google account carries it to other devices. A Krillion app and multiplayer are planned "eventually", and a party game based on Krillion is in the planning stages. New packs come after the creator finishes refining answer curation and rarity scoring.
Tips for sinking deeper
These are our own strategy suggestions rather than official advice:
- Skip your first thought. If an answer arrives instantly, thousands of others thought of it too. Use it as a fallback, not a target.
- Go one layer down. Think of a sub-category inside the prompt (a region, an era, a niche) and pull an example from there.
- Read the restriction twice. A rare answer that breaks the prompt's condition scores nothing.
- Keep a safe answer ready. With 25 seconds, decide early which obvious answer you'll type if nothing better comes.
- Spell carefully. The FAQ explains that autocorrect also checks aliases, so being a letter off can match something unexpected. Its example: "sea donkey" is an alias for the Threebanded Sheephead, one letter away from "sea monkey".
- Practise in the archive or Unlimited, then save your best thinking for the one daily attempt.
If a valid answer gets rejected
The creator is upfront that a fair answer can be missing: the usual reason is a source that wasn't picked up when the answer set was built. Note the prompt and your answer, double-check spelling and the prompt's exact wording, and get in touch through the contact address listed in the FAQ. When discussing a prompt publicly on the same day, mark spoilers so others can still play.
