Minecraft Preview 26.70.21: packed ice bricks and test setup
What Minecraft Preview 26.70.21 changes, which platforms get it, and how to plan a separate test world for packed ice and music features.
A Bedrock preview, not the final release
Mojang’s October 20, 2026 notes identify Minecraft Beta & Preview 26.70.21 as a work-in-progress build. Preview is available on Xbox, PlayStation, Windows and iOS, with an Android beta through Google Play. This is not a Java snapshot or a statement that every stable Bedrock installation already contains the changes.
The headline addition is a decorative packed-ice brick family: bricks, slabs, stairs, walls and chiselled blocks. The notes say the bricks do not melt and that a pickaxe is the best tool. They do not give a complete crafting-grid diagram in the text we checked, so we are not inventing one from the recipes of another block set.
Our recommendation is to use a separate test world. A preview is a place to inspect upcoming behavior, not a reason to risk the only copy of a long-running survival build. Follow Mojang’s linked platform instructions rather than an unofficial installer.
A small building test that answers useful questions
Start with a compact sample of the new shapes instead of rebuilding your entire base. Put a full block, stair, slab and wall beside the palette you already use, then compare them in the lighting where you intend to build. This is a proposed test plan, not a claim that we have rendered or benchmarked this preview ourselves.
Check the current recipe book and Creative inventory for the exact shape names and recipes presented by your installation. A preview’s interface can answer that question more accurately than a guessed grid on a guide page. If an expected entry is absent, first confirm the version and relevant experimental options rather than downloading a replacement resource pack from a random mirror.
Keep notes about what you changed. “The stair looks wrong” is harder to reproduce than a report naming the version, direction, adjacent block and resource pack. A screenshot of a small isolated example is also easier to understand than a large decorated room.
Ice changes worth checking separately
The official changelog also adjusts Ice Ball damage and brittle-ice falls into crevasse caves. It adds ambient ice sounds and changes several freezing-related behaviors. These are separate systems: a new building block does not establish that every ice surface behaves identically, and an audio change is not a crafting recipe.
For exploration, our suggested approach is to inspect unfamiliar ice in a disposable test world before relying on it during a valuable survival journey. Note which block name appears, what breaks and what remains. We have not measured a safe traversal method, a guaranteed damage threshold or a farming route for the new content.
For sound testing, remove competing music and compare one situation at a time. Do not interpret silence in a short recording as proof that a chance-based ambient event is broken. Use the exact conditions in Mojang’s notes if you want a reproducible bug report, and include the resource packs that were active.
Music add-on: a separate setup and limitation
The same notes describe a built-in Music Features Add-On. It needs its resource pack added to the world, with a matching behavior pack. Mojang says these features do not work with Realms yet. The notes name a Disc Press, Blank Discs and a Pocket Jukebox; the latter can hold up to twenty track or vanilla music discs and is heard by the player using it.
If the Disc Press appears empty, the notes suggest restarting the game. That is a documented troubleshooting step, not a universal fix for unrelated launch problems. Check the version and pack setup first so you know what you are actually testing.
Keep experimental content and stable-world plans separate. Our Subnautica 2 update guide explains another game where a test branch and the main build have different save expectations. For a different limited preview, see ArcheAge Chronicles. None of those access systems changes how Minecraft Preview is installed.
Frequently asked questions
- Is 26.70.21 a stable Minecraft release?
- No. Mojang labels it Beta & Preview and warns that work-in-progress versions can be unstable and may not represent final quality.
- Do packed ice bricks melt?
- The official notes say the new decorative bricks do not melt and list a pickaxe as the best tool. Use the current recipe book for recipes rather than an assumed crafting pattern.
- Can I use the music features on Realms?
- The checked notes say those add-on features do not work with Realms yet. They require the Music Features resource pack and matching behavior pack in the test world.
- Where should I get the preview?
- Use the platform-specific Preview FAQ and Android beta instructions linked by Mojang’s official notes. We do not offer an APK or unofficial game installer.
